“Light is a thing that cannot be reproduced, but must be represented by something else – by colour.” Paul Cezanne

David Phillips is an artist fascinated by light & colour, especially where they come together to create magic.

Artists I Like/Admire

David says, “At my end of the age spectrum and with all that I’ve seen, my list is more about my guides on the road, who have suggested where I should visit, rather than suggest where I might end up. (I find it too pretentious to talk about ‘my practice’).

The list principally refers to those who fall into the broad description of ‘colourists’ and/or visionaries (that is those whose visions engage me) rather than those that just ‘use’ colour. And some that fall a little or entirely outside that definition but are included because I admire them! (Such as Kentridge & Schwitters). In no particular order:

Barrie Cook William Brown

Ben Nicholson William Kentridge

David Hockney Winifred Nicholson (some)

Duncan Shanks Francis Boag

Ellsworth Kelly James Henry Daugherty

Patrick Heron Ashley Hanson

Pablo Picasso Albert Irvin

Tony Goble Matthew Langley

Paul Peter Piech Emily Mason

Gareth Davies Alison McWhirter

Howard Hodgkin Jenny Mehan

Brendan Burns Frank Stella

Kurt Schwitters Joaquin Sorolla

Joan Miro

The Australian Aboriginal ‘Abstract Colourists’. Josef Albers on colour theory.

Plus, my great friend Glenys Cour, one of /the? principal Welsh colourist/s who, at 100 still paints every day and is a model to an ageing painter”!
